New in Bethesda This Summer: What Just Opened, What's Next, and Where To Spend a Friday Night

If you have lived in Bethesda for more than a couple of years, you already know the reflex. When friends ask where to eat, you point them to Bethesda Row. When a new restaurant is announced, you assume it will land on Woodmont Avenue somewhere between the Barnes & Noble that used to be there and the movie theater. That habit needs an update. The most interesting food block in downtown Bethesda this summer is not on the Row at all. It is a two-block stretch of Fairmont Avenue and St. Elmo Avenue inside the Woodmont Triangle, and it has been quietly absorbing nearly every ambitious opening announced in the last twelve months.

This is a walking tour of what changed while you were on vacation, what is about to change, and how to plan a Friday night around it.

The Woodmont Triangle is doing the work Bethesda Row used to do

Look at the addresses. On Fairmont alone: Taco Bamba has announced plans to open a new location later this year at 4905 Fairmont Avenue in downtown Bethesda. Two doors down, No Regrets Pizza Co., a locally owned pizzeria selling Roman, Neapolitan and New York-style pies, is slated to open a new location in downtown Bethesda in May 2026 at 4925 Fairmont Ave. in Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle neighborhood. Between them, Woodmont Triangle is also slated to get a new bakery this year with the opening of Rosetta x Best Buddies. The Italian bakery will open in the former space of Pitango Gelato & Coffee at 4901 Fairmont Ave. and plans to employ people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Around the corner on St. Elmo, Call Your Mother is making its return to Bethesda with a store opening at 4828 St. Elmo Ave. in the downtown Woodmont Triangle neighborhood. The bagel shop is expected to open this spring. One block north on Norfolk, in a long-vacant corner unit, Cantonese Thai restaurant Six Ways to Sunday is slated to open in downtown Bethesda's Woodmont Triangle neighborhood. The chef, Satang Ruangsangwatana, is not a chain operator working through a brand playbook. She is the chef and culinary consultant behind Washington, D.C.'s Bar Chinois and ran the Fat Nomads food truck in Kensington from 2017 to September 2025. She and her partner, chef Lekki Limvatana, operated the food truck and a supper club in the D.C. region together.

That is a taco counter, an independent pizzeria, a mission-driven Italian bakery, a Washington bagel favorite, and a fusion gastropub run by two working chefs — all inside roughly two blocks. It is the kind of density Bethesda Row was built to produce and, for a long stretch, mostly did.

What Bethesda Row is doing instead

The Row is not standing still. It is just leaning in a different direction: apparel, wellness, and one very good ice cream shop.

The wellness lifestyle brand ALO has opened its first Montgomery County location at Bethesda Row in Bethesda. The new store is located at 7236 Woodmont Avenue, Unit 45. Johnnie-O opened its first Maryland store at Bethesda Row in May. The Southern California lifestyle brand offers apparel, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children. Collars & Co., the menswear brand known for its appearance on Shark Tank, officially opened its flagship Bethesda store on June 10.

The one Bethesda Row food story that has traveled beyond the DMV this year is a dessert one. National recognition recently came to Max's Best Ice Cream, which was named one of Food & Wine magazine's "6 Coolest New Ice Cream Shops in America" less than a year after opening in Bethesda. Bring out-of-town guests here, not to a chain.

The Hyatt Regency is now a dinner reservation

For years, the ground floor of the Hyatt Regency at One Bethesda Metro Center registered as a place you passed on the way to the escalator down to the trains. That changed in July. A new Mediterranean restaurant has officially opened its first Maryland branch in downtown Bethesda. Co-owned by husband and wife Betul and Ismail Uslu, Agora Bethesda will be serving authentic Mediterranean cuisine from its location inside the Hyatt Regency Bethesda, just off Wisconsin Avenue.

Agora is not new to the region, and that is the point. The current menu includes signature dishes ranging from cold and hot mezze to grilled branzino and octopus, and slow-cooked lamb shoulder. Guests can also expect traditional desserts such as kunefe and baklava. Agora is taking over the space vacated by Daily Grill in the Hyatt Regency hotel located at One Bethesda Metro Center. If you have ever tried and failed to book a Sunday brunch reservation at their D.C. or Tysons locations, the Bethesda one currently has the shortest wait.

A few blocks south on Wisconsin, another arrival worth planning around: The Food Market, an American restaurant specializing in "playful" comfort foods, is anticipated to open an outpost in downtown Bethesda this May, according to chef and owner Chad Gauss. The eatery, which has locations in Baltimore and Columbia, will be on the ground floor of Hampden House at 4700 Hampden Lane.

What is still coming before the leaves turn

Not everything on the announcement list has opened yet. Two are worth watching in particular.

Daily Provisions, a New York City-based restaurant and café chain, is planning a location in downtown Bethesda. The chain, which offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options and is known for its cruller pastries, will be located in the ground-floor restaurant space at the foot of The Charles apartment building at 7342 Wisconsin Ave. The Bethesda outpost will be the café chain's first location in Maryland and second in the Washington, D.C. area. In August, the chain opened a location in D.C.'s Dupont Circle neighborhood. If you have made the trip to their Dupont counter for a cruller, you understand why this one matters.

The other watchlist entry is around the corner from the Woodmont Triangle bakeries. Popup Bagels is planning to open at 7607 Old Georgetown Road on the ground floor of the Solaire apartment complex. While signage touting the new eatery is posted on the windows, the Connecticut-based bagel chain did not provide an opening timeline. Combined with Call Your Mother on St. Elmo, downtown Bethesda is about to have two of the most talked-about bagel operations on the East Coast within a five-minute walk of each other. Pick a side.

Two others already changed hands this year and are easy to miss. Tato's and Sweeteria Dessert Café, two eateries that originated in downtown Silver Spring, are hosting grand openings at their new Bethesda locations this week. The Thai street food-inspired Sweeteria will hold its grand opening today at 7525 Old Georgetown Road.

A short accounting of what we lost

Not every long-running Bethesda name made it through the last eighteen months. Worth remembering, if only so you do not drive over and find a papered window:

• After more than 20 years in Bethesda, Mayflower closed its doors at 7925 Norfolk Avenue in May.
• Tia Queta, a long-time staple in local Mexican cuisine, has closed its doors after over 40 years in business. Tia Queta had been part of the restaurant scene since 1981, and remained a favorite of Bethesda diners before its closure on Jan. 31, 2026.
• After nearly three decades as a downtown Bethesda staple, Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery permanently closed its doors in late April 2025.

Two of those three sat inside the Woodmont Triangle. The block is not new to food. It is just replacing forty-year tenants with first-year operators, faster than at any point in recent memory.

Where to actually be on a Friday night

The other reason to be in the Woodmont Triangle right now is that Bethesda Urban Partnership put its summer stage there. Located at 7900 Norfolk Avenue, Bethesda's Summer Concert series features live music on the streets of Woodmont Triangle. Free outdoor concerts run every Friday from 6-8pm by some of the best bands in the DMV. Tables fill by 5:45. Walk over from Six Ways to Sunday or grab a Sweeteria dessert on the way.

The remaining 2026 lineup, per BUP:

Two more standing dates on the summer-into-fall calendar are worth blocking off now. Bethesda Bazar runs September 10 – 12, 2026. And if you want an excuse to introduce the kids to a County police officer without any of the usual context, the Heat for Heroes Chili Cook-Off is September 19, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 2:45 pm. This family-friendly community event will feature Montgomery County police officers and teams competing for the title of Best Chili in the County.

The neighbor's read

The short version, if a friend asks: the Row is turning into a shopping street with a couple of dessert anchors, the Hyatt is finally a dinner destination, and the block you actually want to walk this fall is bounded by Fairmont, St. Elmo, and Norfolk. Park once. Eat twice. Stay for the band.
